DYE 101

There are many types of dyes in the world, but they generally fall into just a few major categories:

Conventional Dyes: Synthetic, chemical-based dyes used in most conventional clothing today.

Low Impact Dyes: Synthetic, chemical-based dyes designed to give the same colour palette as conventional dyes without the use of certain chemical and metal compounds.

Natural Dyes: Dyes made from herbs, fruits, teas, clays or other natural elements.

Most organic clothing manufacturers today use low-impact dyes, which can also be referred to as Azo Free Dyes. This is a category of synthetic, although chemical-based dyes that are substantially better for you and for the environment than conventional dyes. Why?

They use 70% less water to colour your clothes, which reduces waste.

They don’t have toxic compounds ranging from chlorine bleach to known deadly carcinogens.

They don’t have any heavy metal components in them.

Still, while low-impact dyes are better for the environment than conventional dyes, they aren’t as “helpful” for the environment as it could be. So we go one step further: Natural Dyes.

This is a class of natural dyes that are considered top on the eco-scale. Clay-dyes are literally made from natural earth muds and clays. They are mixed with water and nothing else! The colours are softer, but the dye stays put and they tend to lay comfortably on people with chemical sensitivities.

Similarly, there are herbal and tea dyes created from plants. The range of colours is limited, but pure and lovely! Herbal dyeing is difficult to make (partly because of the price) and therefore less common.

Just in case you’re wondering, we use 100% natural or vegetable dyes in our products to give you the greatest peace of mind and skin when wearing them.
